Thyroid Diet

How does food affect your thyroid?

The thyroid gland located at the base of your neck produces a hormone that helps regulate your metabolism and your heart rate. However proper functioning of the thyroid gland is dependent on the presence of iodine, selenium and vitamins in your blood stream. Without the presence of these minerals, the thyroid gland will not be able to function properly. An overdose of these in your blood stream can also affect the thyroid gland adversely.

To keep your thyroid gland healthy, you should regulate the intake of vitamins and minerals in your diet. You should consult a dietitian to help you regulate the same. Below are some general tips to follow –

  • Avoid processed foods – Food processing removes the vitamin and mineral content from fruits and vegetables. It also increases the sugar content in the food.
  • Eat more raw fruits and vegetables – Eating more fruits and vegetables would ensure a larger intake of necessary vitamins and minerals.
  • Limit your sugar intake – High sugar levels in blood stream can adversely affect your thyroid gland.
  • Regulate your salt intake – Salt is a natural source of iodine. You should ensure sufficient salt in your diet.
  • Get enough Iodine – There are many natural sources of iodine like fish, red meat, milk, yogurt, eggs etc. Ensure adequate intake of same.
  • Certain foods make it difficult for your body to absorb iodine. You should avoid these food types. Some examples include cauliflower, broccoli, radishes etc. Consult a dietitian for more details.
  • Food Supplements – You should ensure your vitamin and mineral intake through regular diet. However, if not possible, then you should consult with your doctor before consuming supplements.
  • Drink enough water – A general rule of thumb would be 1-2 liters a day. This is essential as without adequate water your vitamin and mineral intake will not get absorbed into the blood stream.

Consult your dietitian to get you the right meal plan based on your requirements. Do not forget to follow the four pillars for healthy living – Exercise, right diet, proper sleep and a positive outlook.
